Module Overview

This module equips manufacturing industry leaders with frameworks and tools to analyze industry dynamics, build competitive advantages, and formulate and implement strategies aligned with organizational goals. The module emphasizes applying strategy concepts to manufacturing contexts, including growth planning, operational excellence, and navigating technological disruptions like Industry 4.0.

Module Structure

Duration: 4 weekends (16 contact hours) + 20 hours self-study, case analysis, and assessments.

Week 1: Introduction to Strategic Management (4 hours)

  • Strategy definition and levels (corporate, business, functional).
  • Strategic management process: Analysis, formulation, implementation, evaluation.
  • External environment analysis: PESTEL and Porter’s Five Forces for manufacturing industries.
  • Case Study: Analyzing the competitive landscape for the chemical manufacturing sector.
  • Practical:
    Develop a PESTEL analysis for your organization’s manufacturing segment.

Week 2: Building Competitive Advantage (4 hours)

  • Internal analysis: Resource-based view and VRIO framework.
  • Core competencies and capabilities in manufacturing.
  • Generic strategies: Cost leadership, differentiation, and focus.
  • Case Study: Achieving operational excellence for strategic advantage.
  • Practical:
    Perform a VRIO analysis for your organization’s key resources.

Week 3: Strategy Formulation in Manufacturing Contexts (4 hours)

  • Business-level and corporate-level strategies.
  • Strategy in global manufacturing: Expansion and integration.
  • Strategic alliances, joint ventures, and partnerships in manufacturing.
  • ESG and sustainability considerations in strategic planning.
  • Case Study: Strategy formulation for an Industry 4.0 upgrade.
  • Practical:
    Draft a strategic initiative proposal for a manufacturing improvement aligned with ESG.

Week 4: Strategy Implementation and Evaluation (4 hours)

  • Linking strategy to operations and KPIs.
  • Change management for strategy execution in manufacturing.
  • Balanced Scorecard for monitoring and evaluation.
  • Leadership’s role in successful strategy implementation.
  • Capstone Exercise: Develop a strategic plan for your manufacturing unit.

Assessment Structure

  • Participation & Discussions (20%): Contributions to case discussions and group activities.
  • Practical Exercises (30%): PESTEL, VRIO analysis, and strategic proposal submissions.
  • Capstone Project (50%): A structured strategic plan for a real workplace context, evaluated for feasibility, alignment, and impact.
