Managerial Communication

Module Overview

This module equips manufacturing professionals with essential managerial communication skills required to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and operate effectively in complex industrial environments. The module focuses on structured communication, executive writing, presentations, meetings, and interpersonal effectiveness, contextualized for manufacturing organizations, plant environments, and cross-functional leadership roles.

Module Structure

Duration: 4 weekends (16 contact hours) + 20 hours self-study, practice, and assessments
Total Workload: ~75–90 hours (3 ECTS)

Week 1: Foundations of Managerial Communication (4 hours)

  • Communication models and barriers
  • Listening, clarity, and feedback in managerial roles
  • Communication challenges in manufacturing organizations

Communication breakdown in a plant operations team.

Practical:
Assess and reflect on your personal communication style.

Week 2: Professional Writing & Executive Communication (4 hours)

  • Business emails and professional tone
  • Reports, executive summaries, and SOP communication
  • Data-driven communication for decision-making

Case Study:
Poor vs effective executive reporting in manufacturing.

Practical:
Rewrite a real internal email/report for executive clarity.

Week 3: Presentations, Meetings & Stakeholder Communication (4 hours)

  • Structuring impactful presentations
  • Conducting productive meetings
  • Communicating with customers, vendors, and regulators

Case Study:
Stakeholder communication during a production delay.

Practical:
Prepare a short presentation for a leadership or review meeting.

Week 4: Leadership Communication & Difficult Conversations (4 hours)

  • Feedback, conflict management, and negotiation basics
  • Cross-cultural and cross-functional communication
  • Communicating change and decisions

Capstone Exercise:
Develop a managerial communication improvement plan for your role.
