Module Overview

This module equips manufacturing industry leaders with frameworks, tools, and practical skills to design, manage, and optimize supply chains for efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. It contextualizes SCM for manufacturing sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, engineering, and textiles, addressing supplier management, demand forecasting, inventory control, logistics, and Industry 4.0-enabled supply chain transformation.

Module Structure

Duration: 4 weekends (16 contact hours) + 20 hours self-study, simulations, and assessments.

Week 1: Introduction to Supply Chain Management (4 hours)

  • Supply chain concepts, objectives, and functions.
  • Supply chain structures in manufacturing industries.
  • Key performance indicators in supply chain management.
  • Case Study: Overview of a chemical manufacturing supply chain.
  • Practical: Map your organization's current supply chain flow with key partners and processes.

Week 2: Demand Forecasting, Inventory, and Procurement Management (4 hours)

  • Demand forecasting methods and challenges.
  • Inventory control: EOQ, safety stock, reorder points.
  • Supplier selection and relationship management.
  • Procurement best practices in manufacturing.
  • Case Study: Managing raw material procurement under demand variability.
  • Practical: Calculate EOQ and safety stock for a key raw material.

Week 3: Logistics, Distribution, and Supply Chain Network Design (4 hours)

  • Transportation planning and cost management.
  • Warehouse design and distribution strategies.
  • Network design and optimization for cost and responsiveness.
  • Managing global logistics in manufacturing supply chains.
  • Case Study: Optimizing distribution for a mid-sized manufacturing firm.
  • Practical: Design a basic distribution network plan for your organization’s key product.

Week 4: Advanced Supply Chain Strategies and Digital Transformation (4 hours)

  • Lean and agile supply chains.
  • Risk management and building supply chain resilience.
  • ESG and sustainability in supply chain practices.
  • Industry 4.0: IoT, AI, and data analytics in supply chain optimization.
  • Capstone Exercise: Develop a supply chain improvement proposal for your organization.

Assessment Structure

  • Participation & Discussions (20%): Contribution to discussions and practical activities.
  • Practical Exercises (30%): Supply chain mapping, inventory calculations, and network design.
  • Capstone Project (50%): A detailed supply chain improvement plan for your organization, evaluated for practical feasibility and alignment with best practices.
